Located on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city – and one of its most interesting destinations. Known for the diversity of its inhabitants, it has plenty going on in terms of culture and entertainment and is also near a number of beautiful nature areas. These are three of the most interesting attractions in and around Durban:
- The Golden Mile. One of the most famous urban beach areas in South Africa (if not the whole continent), the Golden Mile is the beating heart of Durban. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, the area is known as a serious surfing hotspot attracting professional wave riders from near and far.
- Museums. Museums are arguably not the first thing that most people think of when they think of Durban, but all the same, the city has a few decent ones. These include the Port Natal Maritime Museum which has several historical ships on display, the Natural Science Museum, the Durban Cultural and Document Center dedicated to the indentured Indian laborers that were brought to the area by the British, and the KwaZulu Natal Society of the Arts.
- uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Taking up a sizable coastal portion north of Durban, uMhlanga is one of the most interesting nature preserves in the area. Made up of a river mouth and a dry forest, this is the right place to see landscapes characteristic of the Durban area, with many hiking trails permitting you to do just that. The drive from the city takes only about 25 minutes.

Went to Ballito and Umkhumbi Lodge. Went to Hluhluwe Imfolozi reserve and did a game drive. It was an incredible visit and look forward to next time. Highly recommend Umkhumbi Lidge if you really want to get away.

Try to allow time to visit the Mangwanami spa in Durban. Value for money.Be very vigilant and careful especially at night. Be extra careful when driving, as many ignore all road rules. Research car hire through websites policies, especially if you are unable to fetch vehicle on time. My flight arrived very late by 1 day and It was taken as a non show within the said period. The car company said I had to make a new booking and the price changed to a higher amount although the rental period was still the same. However, there are many beautiful places to visit especially the coastal areas.

Disappointed at my old home town. Lived on our nerves whilst driving, while protests were all over the town. As we have family still there we will return for visits. The car went well so we're very pleased about that!
